All industriesRetail & grocery · the shelf layer is live, the counter is next

The scale, the barcode and the awkward question.

Run the whole shop. From one login. A grocery counter is three jobs a restaurant till never does: price something by weight, find it by barcode, and refuse a sale you are not allowed to make. The scanner runs at the counter today. Weighing and the age check are built and tested, waiting on the counter screen our first shop will shape — and all three read the same stock, the same customers and the same books.

What it does

A shelf business is an inventory business wearing an apron.

Everything hard about a store is stock: what is on the shelf, what it cost, what is about to expire and what walked out unrecorded. Mangrove treats the counter as the front end of inventory rather than a separate cash machine — so a sale, a shrink and a delivery all move the same number.

Weigh it, scan it, log it.

A weighed item is priced from the reading, not typed from a chart taped to the counter. A scanned barcode resolves against your own catalogue. And an age-restricted sale records that the check happened — because “we always ask” is not evidence.

  • The age check is an audit event, not a checkbox. It is written to the same append-only audit trail as every other change, so an inspector gets a record rather than an assurance.
  • Stock moves oldest-first. The same first-expiry-first-out rule the kitchen uses for ingredients runs your shelf, so the thing closest to its date leaves first.
What’s included

The counter, and everything behind it.

Scale pricing

A weight reading becomes a priced line — per kilo, per pound, with the tare handled — instead of a number read off a laminated chart and typed in.

Barcode lookup

Scan resolves against your own catalogue, so the price at the counter is the price you set, not the one a supplier printed.

Live today

Age verification

Restricted lines stop the sale until the check is done, and the check itself is written to the audit trail with who, what and when.

Oldest stock leaves first

First-expiry-first-out across the shelf, the same rule the kitchen uses on ingredients — so waste is a decision, not a discovery.

Live today

Landed cost and margin

Every line knows what it cost to get to the shelf, so the margin on a basket is real rather than a percentage someone assumed.

Live today

One inventory, one ledger

The till, the delivery and the write-off all move the same stock number, and all land in the same finance. Nothing to reconcile at the weekend.

Live today

Weighing, the age check and cycle counting all run today at the data layer — open a count, add lines, submit, see the variance — but their counter and admin screens, and the grocery employees pack, are still roadmap rather than shipped. Shelf-label printing is not built.

Why it’s easier

The counter stops being an island.

A till that knows prices and nothing about stock — counted again by hand on Sunday. The sale is the stock movement. The shelf number is right at closing time because nothing else could have changed it.
Weights typed from a chart taped to the counter, and the odd expensive mistake. The scale reading becomes the line. Nobody multiplies anything in their head.

What you get

What a shop switches on.

Three tiers, and no surprises in the bill: what every Mangrove product comes with, what shelves, a scanner and a queue at the till needs on top of that, and what else you can switch on. Mangrove for Retail & Grocery includes all of it — you never pay per tool, and there is no module you have to buy.

Add-ons cost nothing extra. They are separate only because most businesses of this kind do not switch them on in the first week.

Need something none of these do? The studio builds it — same team, and we have done it before.

The awkward hour

The day doesn’t go to plan. It rarely does.

Software demos well on the happy path. What decides whether you keep it is the hour it goes wrong. These are four that happen to a shop, and what happens next.

The scale

A weighed item rings up wrong.

Price-per-kilo lives on the item, so the deli counter and the front till are quoting the same number by construction.

The law

Nobody recorded the age check.

A restricted sale asks for it and writes it down — so the answer to an inspector is a record, not a colleague’s memory.

The shelf

It says eight. There are three.

Counting a few shelves often beats counting everything once a year — the drift shows up while it is still small.

The packet

The barcode is not in the system.

Scan it, name it, price it, sell it — in the queue, without leaving the till.

Pricing

One rate, per person who logs in.

A shop floor runs on a handful of logins and a lot of lanes. This is priced per person who logs in, not per lane, not per till, and with no setup quoted on top of it.

$450per user, per yearThe subscription for Mangrove for Retail & Grocery. One rate for everyone who logs in, billed annually.

What it covers

  • Everything described on this page
  • Every module listed, switched on or off as you like
  • Support 12 hours a day, 5 days a week
  • Setup, updates and hosting of the software itself
  • No implementation project — you are running the week you sign

Extras, only if you ask

  • 24/7 support — $1,500 a year
  • The AI tier — $2,500 a year

Not included

  • Card processing — your processor’s own rate, paid to them
  • Hardware — this runs on ordinary ~$170 tablets you can buy anywhere

Buy a year at a time and renew, or buy several years up front — renewal pricing is confirmed with you at renewal. The 24/7 option is the service previously called Premium, not a second charge on top of it. Your data exports whenever you want it.

What it’s worth

The price is the easy part.

What software like this is worth is not a number we get to invent. Below is what other people measured, with the source on every one — set against a $450 bill.

$450per user, per year — everything on this page
  • $1.23a day, per user
  • 41venti caramel macchiatos, spread across twelve months
  • $0to set up, and no implementation project to schedule

Read those as figures for this kind of software, published by other people — not as measurements of Mangrove for Retail & Grocery. Two of the three come from companies that sell a remedy for the problem they measured; we have named all three, and dated them, so you can weigh that yourself.

$7.23 back on a dollar is a ratio, and the dollars underneath it were much larger dollars. Mainstream software at a typical $35 per user per month is about $420 a year for each person who logs in, and quotes the setup on top of that. We are not going to pretend the ratio multiplies cleanly onto a smaller bill; nobody has measured that. What we can say is which half of it we control. Per person, we made the denominator $450 — and there is no setup line under it.
